Mt. Carmel

Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church is located north of Highway 77 in the Churchton community
five miles east of Newbern, Tennessee at the corner of Trimble Road and Grills Road

The Memphis Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South appointed Rev. G. W. Evans in November of 1890 to organize and serve the Mt. Carmel Church.  The two acres of land where the church now stands was purchased from Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Hendricks with the deed being executed on October 14, 1891.  The first trustees, to which the land was first deeded, were G. H. Holder, A. C. Hendricks, A. J. Grills, W. W. Haynes and J. S. Haynes.  The first building, a frame structure, was erected and remained until 1923.  At that time, the frame structure was torn down to the floor level and the present building was erected on it.  The Sunday school addition and rooms were added in 1954.
From its beginning until 1958, Mt. Carmel part of a five-church circuit known as the Newbern Circuit.  In 1958 this five-church circuit was divided into two charges.  Mt. Carmel, Church Grove and Nebo made a three-church charge with Rehobeth and Center making a two-church charge.  In 1973, Nebo, Dyer, Church Grove and Newbern were combined leaving Mt. Carmel by itself.  Dr. H. J. Burkett supplied the church until June 1976 at which time Mt. Carmel was added to the Trimble-Mason Hall charge.  In the following years. Mt. Carmel was joined with church charges of Obion and Trimble.  In June 2008, Mt. Carmel and Newbern First combined to create a two-church charge.
